Sandra Katharine Davidson is a multimedia artist, producer, and creative director who makes work about creativity, women, Southern culture, and the human spirit. She has directed, filmed, and edited several short documentary films and music videos and is currently producing and filming three feature-length documentaries with Emmy Award-winning director Cynthia Hill, as well as a documentary series about her family’s quest to build a wooden sailboat.
Alongside her filmmaking, Sandra is a photographer who focuses on portraiture and the natural world. Drawing on her lifelong passion for pop culture, movies, and music, she has produced editorial shoots for musicians, contemporary naturalistic glamour shoots for women, and documentary-style family portraits. Inspired by the likes of Georgia O’Keefe, Jane Campion, Cindy Sherman, and Joan Semmel, her ongoing multimedia self-portraiture project, Every One of Thems Me, explores themes of depression, sexuality, feminity, and Southern culture. Currently, she is developing two series: Home to My Valley, which vividly captures blooming flowers and rural landscapes from her childhood home in rural North Carolina, and Nightblooms, a collection of stark dreamlike images of seasonal flowers photographed at night.
A folklorist by training (MA in Folklore, UNC-Chapel HIll, 2015), her work is rooted in a strong sense of place. A lifelong North Carolinian, she grew up rural and currently resides in Durham. For a decade now, she’s produced multimedia documentary stories about life and culture in N.C.
During her tenure as content and marketing director at the N.C. Arts Council (2017-2021), she developed and produced hundreds of stories and three statewide marketing campaigns about North Carolina's arts community. In that role, she co-hosted and co-produced Under One Roof, a virtual concert event that raised over $50,000 for artists affected by the pandemic. From 2015-2022 she hosted and produced She and Her, a Southern feminist podcast and radio show with Anita Rao, current host of NPR’s Embodied.
